Abstract

Each year, the UCLA School of Law presents the Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching to an outstanding law professor. On April 12, 2022, this honor was given to Professor Aslı Ü. Bâli. UCLA Law Review Discourse is proud to continue its tradition of publishing a modified version of the ceremony speech delivered by the award recipient.

About the Author

Aslı Ü. Bâli joined the Yale Law School as Professor of Law in July 2022. Previously, she was Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law and served as the Director of the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies. Professor Bâli also served as the Founding Faculty Director of the UCLA Promise Institute for Human Rights She has authored and coauthored several influential articles in international law and has edited two volumes on aspects of constitutional design in the comparative law of the Middle East. Professor Bâli serves as an editor of the American Journal of International Law, co-chair of the advisory committee of the MENA division of Human Rights Watch, and she is the president-elect of the Middle East Studies Association of North America.
