About the Author
Criminal defense and human rights lawyer. Lecturer, UCLA School of Law; Senior Legal Fellow, Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide. Former member of Students for Justice in Palestine at University of California, Berkeley, while also a student of June Jordan’s Poetry for the People. I am profoundly impacted by Elmaz Abinader, as my teacher, mentor, and a writer whose voice is a North Star of inspiration. I will never forget the generosity, kindness, and warmth that my colleagues, human rights defenders, beloved friends, law students, and random strangers in Palestine showed me, while I was based in Ramallah as a volunteer lawyer. I am forever indebted to them. To his credit, Nadim Naser, the love of my life, stayed up late, reviewed each iteration of this, and provided trusted feedback at every turn. My immense gratitude to Amber Baylor, Ata Hindi, and Raha Jorjani for their input, encouragement, and thoughtful reviews. I sincerely thank the UCLA Law Review editors for their insights, support, and meaningful engagement with me on this submission.
