About the Author
My brother, Faress Arafat, is a nurse from Gaza. Faress is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science in Global Health at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He completed his bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Islamic University of Gaza, which has now been destroyed due to the ongoing war. He was pursuing his master’s degree in nursing at the same university before the war began. In October 2023, he volunteered at Al-Shifa Hospital for several weeks and documented his experiences in his diary. He sent me some entries in Arabic when he had internet access while at the hospital and after he evacuated to the south. They are translated and edited below. Faress Arafat is the youngest of three brothers and four sisters, some of whom are currently trapped in a tent in Khan Yunis, while the rest have successfully evacuated to Egypt.
